M-PESA PAYMENT SYSTEM IMPACT ON KENYA'S ECONOMY

Summary

The article examines the impact of products and services of innovative financial companies in the fintech industry on changing the financial market architecture and their potential impact on the economy. Recent innovations in the financial sector sometimes have quite unexpected consequences and impacts on both financial systems architecture and the economy as a whole. They change the population's purchasing habits, increase the requirements for speed and quality of services, change the calculation methods, which directly affects the change in the way of doing business. The main features of such financial innovations are addressing the financial needs of customers where banks fail to do it, increasing financial inclusion, reducing direct communication between customers and banks, and the flow of a significant portion of transaction income from banks to companies providing such alternative financial services. The paper focuses on the analysis of M-Pesa impact on the economy through the prism of changes in the introduction of economic activity of Kenyans. The impact of financial inclusion on improving the efficiency of economic activity and its total positive effect on the economy has been described. The practical significance of the obtained results is that they can be used in making management and investment decisions and developing measures to increase the population's level of financial inclusion and the state economy development.
Financial institutions do not always pay due attention to this industry, and not always take it seriously, especially when we talk about banking management. Quite a few banking executives perceive fintech mostly as a marginal phenomenon, popular among an inner circle of IT professionals. Meanwhile, the fintech industry products are launching inevitable processes that are seriously transforming the financial market, and those financial institutions that ignore this industry today will be forced to play by its rules tomorrow, or leave the market. In fact, Kenyan banks have felt this quite well, and have been forced to modernize their business processes, products and activities to maintain a certain market share. M-Pesa is not a unique product, it is not an exception and dropping to the rules in the financial system functioning. This is a trend that is gaining momentum. One example is the WeChat Wallet system in China, which in fact has already its own financial ecosystem, with about 1 billion Chinese people daily active users. These people have almost no interaction with banks. Banks have virtually no information about these people and do not receive income from their transactions, because all the benefits are reaped by WeChat Wallet. Banks in this case perform only the role of gateways for the introduction or withdrawal of customer funds, which WeChat system stores in their accounts in these banks. Therefore, such financial products clearly need attention, study and analysis, because they form the architecture of the financial market of tomorrow and have a very large impact on the economy on a national scale.
